Learning to solve problems is now considered to be one of the main reasons for doing mathematics. Many teachers now have considerable experience of using a wide range of problems with their classes and it is widely acknowledged that a balanced approach to teaching mathematics will include problems that make students think, as well as exercises to help them polish algorithmic skills.
